Thousands of Bulloch County residents have been without power overnight due to a powerful storm that swept through Southern Georgia on Tuesday evening, August 8, 2023. At 4:30 AM Wednesday morning - GPC and EMC continues to report 3,959 Bulloch County residents without power. Most of the outage is in Southern Bulloch County. 66,510 remain without power throughout South Georgia.
At one point Tuesday evening Excelsior EMC reported that 1/3 of their entire customer base was without power, over 10,000 customers. They requested additional help from EMC crews outside of Bulloch County. Pike EMC sent crews overnight to assist EMC crews.
At 2 AM Wednesday morning EMC released this message to their customers:
"Due to the severe weather we experienced Tuesday evening, we have suffered extensive damage across our service territory. We have line crews from other co-ops arriving Wednesday morning to assist with the restoration effort as well as our own personnel and contract crews currently still out working. We started out with close to 10,000 of our members out of power and are currently down to 4877. We are working diligently to get the lights back on but we expect these outages to last into late Wednesday afternoon. Thank you for your patience."
EMC and GPC crews have worked through the night to restore power, but they have been hampered by the wide spread, isolated outages caused primarily by downed trees from high winds.
One of the challenges of this storm was the size of the impact area. Much of Southern Georgia has been impacted by the storm. 66,510 Georgians remain without power as of 4:30 AM Wednesday.
Grice Connect has received reports throughout the night of debris and trees down throughout the Southern part of Bulloch County. Bulloch County Public Safety and Bulloch County Public Works crews have worked through the night to clear roadways.
Motorist are advised to use extreme caution when travelling to work early Wednesday morning.
Power companies urges citizens to please do not approach downed power lines or items that are touching power lines.
