The 2024 flag football season is set to begin this week, and the Portal Panthers are looking to turn some heads.

The Lady Panthers are led by head coach Huey Williams and assistant coaches David Yates and Emma Yates.

Portal finished last season with a 4-7 record. The coaches of the team came together to answer questions about what to expect from the Lady Panthers this season and what their goals are.

"Coming off of a 4-7 season, our main goal is to keep these girls motivated and process driven to achieve what we are capable of," Williams. "We are looking a lot stronger this season than our previous; we have to instill the mindset that we can compete and we are good enough."

The Panthers are bringing back some familiar faces from last season. The coaches sited a couple of them that will be big contributors. Kateilyn Yates will start at quarterback this season after starting as the JV quarterback last year. London Blackmon was a key piece to the team last year as a receiver and defender. Hailey Scott is a senior and is one of the best pass rushers on the team. McKinley Motes and De'Angela Hughes are two upcoming linebackers that should have a big impact on the success of the Panther defense.

Coach Williams said that this season is more than just developing the girls as players, but also as people.

"This season we are emphasizing accountability to our girls to make sure that we are not only making good players out of them, but also good people," Williams said.

The season is set to begin on Monday, October 21st when the Panthers go to Calvary Day School to face Calvary Day and Groves.
