Six youth swimmers from the Southern Eagle Aquatics (SEGA) swim team recently saw success at the Georgia Swimming State Championship swim meet.
“I couldn’t be happier with our team’s progress and the commitment of our families,” said Southern Eagle Aquatics head coach, Beau Caldwell. “Each year we’ve grown in qualifiers at championship meets; more participation means more fun and higher performance for our athletes.”
Georgia Swimming, a local division of USA Swimming, hosted an Age-Group Championship and Junior Olympic (JO) meet for athletes 14 and under on July 14 to 17 at Georgia Tech.
The senior state championship (all ages) was at the University of Georgia from July 22 to 24. Both competitions were in the 50-meter pool, the same pool length as contested in the Olympic games.
State Championship results:
Jada Fedrick (11, Cobbtown), finished with six-of-six best times in the JO meet and earned a new AG State time in the 50 freestyle. Fedrick also took first place in the 50 and 100 freestyle.
Kenny Griffith (12) was the sole scorer at the AG State Championship meet, having earned scoring swims in the 50 fly (10th), 100 butterfly (11th), 200 butterfly (5th), 400 Individual Medley (15th), and 100 freestyle (19th), all in personal best times.
Gweneth Son (10, Statesboro) qualified for AG State in her first year as a USA Swimmer, earning her way there in the 50 backstroke, and swimming best times in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly as bonus events.
Ethan Swanson (12, Statesboro) competed in both the AG State meet and JO finishing 21st in the 200 butterfly, and earning best times in four of five events at the JO meet.
Oscar Thorpe (14, Statesboro), competed in his first qualification meet, having earned best times in six-of-eight events across four different competitive disciplines in the JO meet.
