Loving on Langston: Statesboro Service League gives back at school

What began as a heartfelt effort to fill teacher wishlists at Langston Chapel Elementary has now turned into an ongoing project to support the school and its students, faculty, and staff.

In the Spring of 2023, the Statesboro Service League began “Loving on Langston” to support Langston Chapel Elementary School in Statesboro.

Service League member Jade Ainsworth said, “Loving on Langston started as a project of my provisional class the first year I became part of the Service League."

The SSL held a teacher supply drive, where teachers created Amazon wish lists. Brittany Seeloff, Statesboro Service League Chair, shared, “Thanks to the generosity of our community, every wish list was fulfilled.”

After seeing the incredible impact the project had on Langston Chapel Elementary and the broader community, the initiative evolved into its own dedicated committee within the Statesboro Service League.

The committee steps in to provide resources, encouragement, and hands-on assistance to the staff and students at Langston. They focus on enhancing educational experiences, fostering positive relationships, and meeting basic needs.

The many ways the committee has given to Langston Chapel include: providing treats for students during Georgia Milestones Testing, breakfast and treats for faculty and staff, and much more.

Service League member Karen Brazell shares, “Passing out popsicles at Langston Chapel was a great experience and the highlight of my week. I loved seeing the children and how their eyes lit up getting a special treat.”

She says, “We look forward to SSL working with Langston in the new year by providing exciting activities for the children as well as celebrating the accomplishments and dedication of their teachers and staff.”

For the holiday season, Seeloff shared the league's plans to spread cheer, including a hot chocolate treat for homerooms and a fun-filled ROARY the Elf Hunt for teachers. They are also working with Langston on their school store, with plans to open it in January.

Langston Chapel Elementary School Principal, Al Dekle expressed, “We are incredibly fortunate to have the unwavering support of the Statesboro Service League at Langston Chapel Elementary. Through their generous financial contributions, volunteer efforts, and in-kind donations, they help us create a nurturing environment where our students and staff can thrive. Their partnership is a testament to the power of community, and we are deeply grateful for the lasting impact they continue to make in our school.”

The Loving on Langston committee is led by Brittany Seeloff as chair and Faren Rushing as co-chair. The following members also play key roles in making this initiative a success: Jade Ainsworth, Rachel Barnwell, Jamie Bohler, Karen Brazell, Meagan Hendrix, Cindell Mathis, Ansley Shedd, and Harley Smith. Together, they are working to organize activities, provide resources, and build a sense of community for Langston Chapel Elementary.
