JESUP, GA – The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has announced that crews will begin brine operations in Southeast Georgia today, Sunday, Jan. 19, in preparation for a potential winter weather event expected to impact the region early next week.
Forecast models suggest the possibility of snow or freezing rain in Southeast Georgia starting Tuesday or Wednesday. In response, GDOT crews will work in 12-hour shifts to treat roadways, beginning with brine applications on major routes, including I-95 and I-16.
Brine, a mixture of salt and water, is applied to road surfaces to lower the freezing point of precipitation from 32 degrees to approximately 25 degrees, reducing the likelihood of icy conditions on roadways, bridges, and overpasses.
Safety Reminders for Motorists:
- Avoid crowding GDOT vehicles on the road. Brine trucks must travel at 40 mph to apply treatments effectively.
- Do not pass GDOT vehicles spreading salt or gravel. Gravel may be kicked up and cause damage to vehicles following too closely. Stay back at least 100 feet.
- Be vigilant and adjust driving habits to accommodate changing road conditions.
In addition to brine treatments, GDOT crews are prepared to deploy salt and rock mixtures for ice, as well as snow plows if necessary.
