The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning residents of southeast South Carolina and southeast Georgia, including the Statesboro area, to prepare for a blast of dangerously cold air and the potential for winter precipitation early next week.
Unusually frigid temperatures for the region, dipping into the teens with wind chills as low as 8-15 degrees above zero, are expected Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Adding to the concern, the potential for snow, freezing rain, or sleet exists Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning. While the exact track of the storm system remains uncertain, even small accumulations of winter precipitation could create hazardous travel conditions.
This arctic blast poses a significant risk to vulnerable populations and could lead to widespread impacts on infrastructure and daily life. The NWS is urging residents to take precautions now to protect themselves, their families, and their property.
“While there’s still uncertainty about the exact precipitation type and amounts, one thing is clear: dangerously cold temperatures are on the way,” warned a NWS meteorologist. “Now is the time to prepare for these uncharacteristically frigid conditions.”
In response to a request from Bulloch County EMA, Bulloch County VOAD (Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster) is planning to open a warming shelter at Pittman Park UMC next week.
Early Planning Crucial for Unprepared Residents
These frigid temperatures are highly unusual for the region, and many residents may be unprepared. Bulloch County EMA director Corey Kemp urges citizens to take steps now to safeguard themselves and their families. Here are some tips for staying safe during a cold snap:
- Stock up on essential supplies: Ensure you have enough non-perishable food, bottled water, medications, and other necessities to last for several days in case of power outages or road closures.
- Prepare your home for winter weather: Seal air leaks around windows and doors to prevent drafts, and insulate pipes to avoid freezing. Have a working fire extinguisher and a battery-powered or carbon monoxide-safe heater on hand as a backup heat source.
- Dress in layers: Wear warm clothing, including a hat, scarf, and gloves, when venturing outdoors. Layers allow for easier temperature regulation.
- Look out for vulnerable neighbors: Check on elderly or disabled neighbors who may need assistance staying warm.
