Mount Vernon- Both the men's and women's basketball teams for Portal were able to take home wins on Thursday and advance to the region championship. The Lady Panthers defeated Jenkins County War Eagles 40-32 in the region playoff semifinals. The Panther men routed the Montgomery County Eagles 95-51 in the region playoff semifinals.
Lady Panthers Pull off Upset over No.2 Seed
The Lady Panthers closed out the regular season with a win over Jenkins County. The two teams knew they would see each other again on Thursday. The Lady Panthers would go on to knock off the War Eagles again in the region semifinals.
Both offenses struggled to put points up on the board as Portal went into the half with a 14-12 lead. It was a back and forth affair up until Portal took control in the fourth quarter.
With this win, the Lady Panthers advance to the region championship. Portal also wins the season series over their rivals 2-1. After a rough start to the season, the Lady Panthers got hot at the right time and are on their way to the region championship game.
Panther Men Dominant in Semifinal Win
The Portal men's basketball team held the one-seed coming into the region tournament. On Thursday, they showed why they earned the top seed. The Panthers took control early in the game and did not look back.
The offense was on point all night as the Panthers went into the half with a 48-31 lead. Smelling blood on the water, the Panthers put away the game with a monster 3rd quarter. Portal outscored Montgomery County 34-12 in the 3rd quarter to take a 82-43 lead in to the final period.
The Panthers men have been coasting through majority of the season and will look to add another region championship to the trophy case.

Both teams will play in the region championships on Friday Night at Montgomery County High School in Mount Vernon, Georgia. The women will tip off at 7:00 p.m. and the men will start after.
The Lady Panthers are looking to pull of an even bigger upset against the Montgomery County Eagles. The Panther Men will take on the McIntosh County Academy.
