GSEagles Baseball Complete the Sweep of South Alabama, 5-4

UP NEXT - The Eagles will spend some time on the road this week, as they travel to Macon to play Mercer on March 22. Afterwards, the Eagles will face Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss., in a conference series from March 24 to March 16.

The Georgia Southern baseball team swept the South Alabama Jaguars on Sunday afternoon with a 5-4 win at J.I. Clements Stadium. The Eagles move to 10-10 on the season after the sweep, whule the Jaguars fall to 8-12 on the year.

Jarrett Brown broke the 0-0 stalemate in the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run that was launched 452 feet, just to the right of the batter's eye, putting the Eagles on top with a 1-0 lead after the first three frames. Georgia Southern would plate four more in the bottom of the fourth inning, starting with Zane Faulk scoring on an error by the USA shortstop, followed by J.C. Peacher's RBI-single plating Luke Hatcher. Brown followed that up with an RBI-single of his own, scoring JD Kaiser. To cap off the Eagles' scoring, Sam Blancato knocked a sac fly to center field, sending Peacher home and setting Georgia Southern up with a 5-0 lead.

South Alabama would batting back with a sac fly in the top of the fifth inning, along with an RBI-groundout and a two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning, but the Eagles pitching was able to neutralize the threat in the late innings. Jay Thompson was able to secure his fifth save of the season after striking out the USA batter with runners on the corners in the top of the ninth inning.

Anthony DiMola earned the win in the contest after four innings of two hit baseball, allowing no runs and five strikeouts.

  • This is the first time since 2016 the Eagles have started 3-0 in conference since 2016, when the Eagles swept App State.
  • This is the second season in a row the Eagles have swept South Alabama, and the first time the Eagles have swept USA in Statesboro.
  • Jesse Sherrill led the Eagles offensively with a 3-for-4 day, with three singles and an intentional walk. Jarrett Brown and Zane Faulk both had multi-hit days.
  • Zachary Harris made his first relief appearance in the top of the fifth inning.
