The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had a grand dream and expressed that dream eloquently.
In fact, many who share in that dream will be participating in a spoken word celebration at the Emma Kelly Theater on the Thursday after Martin Luther King Day in Statesboro.
The 8th annual Behold, Here Cometh the Dreamer, a celebration of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through spoken word, will be happening Thursday, Jan. 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the theater at the Averitt Center for the Arts. The sponsor for this event is Davis Bozeman Johnson Law.
Rachel Elkins, Box Office Manager for the Emma Kelly Theater and Communications Officer for the Averitt Center for the Arts said, "The person who started the event was Mical Whitaker. He works with Ressie Fuller on this. The guest speaker [this year] will be Dr. Alvin Jackson."
Regional spoken word artists and rappers will also be performing during the event.

According to WillowHillHeritage.Org, Dr. Jackson, Board President of the Willow Hill Heritage and Renaissance Center, "...was born in Portal, Georgia. He lived on a farm and was one of the first students to integrate the high school there."
"Dr. Jackson received his B.S. degree from Andrews University in Michigan. He also did undergraduate studies at Oakwood College in Alabama. Dr. Jackson was the second recipient of the prestigious Luard Scholarship which allowed him to pursue studies at The University of Keele in England and travel to over 20 countries in Europe and Russia. Dr. Jackson earned his M.D. from The Ohio State University and completed his family practice residency at Mercy Hospital of Toledo, Ohio. On May 16, 2004, Dr. Jackson received the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Heidelberg College."

The regular price for tickets to attend the event is $20. Members, members of the military, first responders, and county employees can buy tickets for $15. Student tickets are $10.
