After years of anticipation and dedicated community advocacy, led by the late Carrie Howard and others, Whitesville Park is set for a major revitalization.
The Statesboro City Council approved a contract with Lavendar & Associates at its December 17, 2024 meeting to begin renovations at the long-neglected park.
Whitesville Park, previously a privately owned and volunteer-run space, closed to the public in 2016 due to disrepair, vandalism, and mounting maintenance issues.
The Whitesville Community Resource and Development Organization Inc. worked diligently with the city for several years to facilitate the park's transfer to public ownership. This transfer was finalized in April 2022.
Since acquiring the property, the City of Statesboro has been actively pursuing funding opportunities for its renovation. Following multiple unsuccessful grant applications to the Department of Community Affairs, the City has committed $1.2 million from the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to bring new life to the park.
Currently featuring a restroom, swingset, and basketball court, Whitesville Park will undergo significant improvements.
The renovation project will deliver a brand-new restroom facility, a modernized basketball court, a new playground, and a welcoming pavilion.
Construction is slated to begin in late Spring 2025, with an anticipated completion in Fall 2025.
This investment marks a significant commitment by the City of Statesboro to providing quality recreational spaces for its residents and fulfills a long-awaited need for the Whitesville community.
