Residents of Statesboro and surrounding Bulloch County are being advised to prepare for a sharp drop in temperatures, as the National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston has issued a Cold Weather Advisory from 10:00 pm Thursday, February 20, 2025 through 10:00 am Friday, February 21, 2025.

According to the latest forecasts, a surge of cold air is expected to grip the region, bringing potentially hazardous conditions. The NWS Charleston reports that overnight lows on Thursday are predicted to plummet into the low to mid 20s, with wind chill values potentially dipping into the upper teens. This means that exposed skin could be at risk of frostbite.

Key points from the NWS Charleston forecast include:

  • Very Cold Night: Low temperatures are expected to be in the low to mid 20s.
  • Wind Chill: North winds will create wind chill values in the upper teens.
  • Cold Weather Advisory: Due to the expected low temperatures and wind chill, a cold weather advisory has been issued.
  • Day time highs: daytime highs will struggle to reach the upper 40s.

"We urge residents to take precautions to protect themselves, their families, and their pets from the cold," said a spokesperson from the NWS. "This includes dressing in layers, limiting outdoor exposure, and ensuring that vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and those without adequate shelter, have access to warmth."

Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Dress Warmly: Wear multiple layers of loose-fitting, warm clothing.
  • Protect Exposed Skin: Cover your ears, nose, and fingers to prevent frostbite.
  • Stay Indoors: Limit your time outdoors, especially during the coldest parts of the day.
  • Check on Neighbors: Check on elderly neighbors and those with limited mobility.
  • Pet Safety: Bring pets indoors or provide them with adequate shelter.
  • Heating Safety: Use heating sources safely and avoid using them too close to flammable materials.
