Georgia Southern women's soccer played an exhibition game against Florida on Aug. 6.

Georgia Southern (GS) women's soccer got its first taste of action of the season on Sunday, playing the University of Florida to a 1-1 draw in an exhibition contest held at Donald R. Dizney Stadium in Gainesville.

"I thought it was a good performance for our first game out," said GS head women's soccer coach Chris Adams.

In the first 30-minute period, the Gators got on the board with a goal from Megan Hinnenkamp, coming just four minutes into the exhibition. Florida would maintain that 1-0 advantage at the end of the first period.

The second period saw the Eagles tie things up as junior Smith Cathey notched a goal in the 42nd minute to bring the match level.

She took a free kick that hit into the wall of Gators players, bounced back, then her follow attempt beat the Florida keeper to the right for the equalizer. At the end of 60 minutes, the score remained tied at 1-1.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the final 30-minute period, ending the exhibition with a 1-1 draw.

"I felt like conceding the first goal so early was due to a few jitters, but after that we weren't rattled and we showed good character in coming back. We found a way to get a goal to tie it, then I felt we were dangerous on several other occasions. The match could have gone either way," said Adams.

GS will play one more exhibition, hosting Kennesaw State on Saturday, Aug.12 at 4 p.m. The match will be a part of Eagle Fan Fest as the GS football team will hold an open scrimmage at 6 p.m., with members of the Eagle soccer squad in attendance signing autographs for fans at Paulson Stadium.
