Earlier this spring, First Baptist Church Statesboro’s Young at Heart (Seniors 50+) launched a day trip to the Alhambra Theater and Dining in Jacksonville, FL.
“It was all about building connections and relationships. Trips like this make it easy for the ‘Young at Heart’ to get out and travel together,” shared David Phillips, FBC Food Service Director/Executive Chef and Pastor to Senior Adults. It was more than just a day trip; it was an opportunity for the YAH to connect, enjoy, and experience something new.
Phillips planned the excursion, noting how popular the nearby attraction is. He shared, “The Alhambra Theater and Dining venue is so popular that their shows sell out months in advance, so it’s important to plan a visit early. By checking the calendar, we were able to book a matinee, making it a perfect day trip.”
Leaving at the glorious hour of 7:30am, (still stuck on that early start!) and cruising down to Jacksonville, the caravan-style 15-passenger mini bus was a mix of comfort (spacious seats, snacks on deck, drinks) and shared conversations that made a regular trip into something memorable.

A pit stop at a Parker’s with the fanciest sinks (water & dryer in the same faucet!) made this a combo of pure comfort and little surprises. The whole journey was like a mix of new adventures, deep talks, and random moments that’ll stick forever.
The YAH enjoyed a matinee of West Side Story, a timeless musical with unforgettable songs and dance, inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Its lasting appeal made it the perfect choice for this inaugural outing.
“Everything at the Alhambra is world class: the friendly staff, the comfortable cozy atmosphere, and the welcome from the owner, amazing food, incredibly talented actors and actresses. You would have thought we were at a show on Broadway in NYC! Absolutely world class and we sure saw why,” added Phillips.
Guests enjoyed a gourmet three-course meal featuring a choice of Manhattan clam chowder or Caesar salad to start, followed by entrées including New York strip steak, fettuccine bolognese, oven-roasted cod, or fettuccine primavera. For dessert, guests chose between classic New York cheesecake and rich Tres Leches cake.
With satisfied appetites, the YAH was ready to enjoy the magnificent presentation of West Side Story in a comfortable, casual environment.

Whether with a friend or a minibus full of strangers, this excursion was truly special.
Lacey Alexander, who the group met at the theater, shared, “On a rare date night away from our four little ones, my husband and I were delighted to sit with four YAH members. After a few introductions, we were laughing like old friends.”
Meleah Bagoly added, “We loved meeting new people and sharing the theater—especially from someone who’s seen many Broadway shows!” Mary NeSmith summed it up: “A wonderful, healing day—a true gift from God.”
Young At Heart has more exciting events coming up soon. On May 13, 2025, they'll host a luncheon with world-renowned author and Pastor Dr. Richard Blackaby (Experiencing God). "Our 'must' event of the year!" they said. And this fall, they'll host a church-wide Bluegrass and BBQ for fun fellowship and connection.
