Reverend B G Hamon, age 94, passed away peacefully on Saturday, 14 December 2024, at Heritage Inn Health and Rehabilitation Center in Statesboro. Born on 28 Aug 1930, in Eagle City, Oklahoma, to Pad and Eula Miller Hamon, he dedicated his life to serving the Lord and his community. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Reverend Hamon faithfully served as a full-time minister, missionary, and state Bishop in the Church of God for over forty years. He began his ministry in 1948 as a seventeen year old evangelist at The Long Branch Church of God in Jenkins County, Georgia, but most of his ministry focused on pastoring. He served first at the Statesboro Church of God, Statesboro, GA (1950-1953) and then the Athens Church of God, Athens, GA (1954-1955), the Garden City Church of God, Savannah, GA (1958-62), 27th Ave Church of God, Columbus, GA (1962-63), Buford Church of God, Buford, GA (1963-1967). From 1967-1976, Rev Hamon served as the administrative bishop in Albuquerque, NM (1967-1970), Upland, CA (1970-1970-1974), and Jackson, MS (1974-1976). Afterwards, he returned to full-time pastoring, serving the Florence Church of God, Florence, SC (1976-1977), the Durst Avenue Church of God, Greenwood, SC (1977-1980),a second time at the Statesboro Church of God (1981-1984), the Baxley Church of God, Baxley, GA (1980-1981), and finally, the Saraland Church of God, in Saraland, AL (1984-1986). He retired from full-time pastoring in 1986. His sermons were known for their enthusiastic and heartfelt delivery and for their biblical depth, which he turned into five books after retirement. Rev Hamon touched countless lives with his compassion and guidance. He had a special gift for missions, making countless trips to South America, Africa, and later to both Russia and Ukraine.
Beyond his pastoral duties, he enjoyed hunting, especially quail, and fishing, especially bass and bream, in a Statesboro area pond. He was also an avid football fan, following the Atlanta Falcons, both Georgia Tech and Georgia, and especially Georgia Southern.
He is predeceased by his wife of 70 years Dorothy Aycock Hamon (2020); his children Gary Hamon (2023) and Lori Hamon Dill (2008); his parents Pad (1968) and Eula Miller Hamon (1976); and his siblings Pat Hamon (2010), Betty Hamon Lankford (2012), Wanda Hamon Kirkland (2004), Ilene Hamon Mullins (2021), Helene Hamon Bailey (2024), and Robert Wayne Hamon (2002).
He is survived by his second wife Marjorie Allen Hamon of Portal, GA, his children, Keith Hamon (Daphne) of Macon, GA, Randy Hamon (Kathy) of Flowery Branch, GA, and Julie Hamon Wilson (David) of Statesboro, GA; his grandchildren, Cory Hamon of Macon, GA, Jason Hatcher of Atlanta, GA, Amy Hamon Wright (Joel) of Albany, GA, Brent Hamon of Jacksonville, FL, Bethany Hamon Pepin (Ryder) of Remer, MN, Emily Dill Saxon (George) of Statesboro, GA, Blake Hamon (Laura) of Jefferson, GA, Evan Dill (Katherine) of Greer, SC, Taylor Hamon (Mariah) of Chattanooga, TN, Thomas Hamon McKay (PJ) of Cleveland, TN, Jonathan Lumpkin (Samara) of Atlanta, GA, Sydney Hamon Casavant (Elana) of Chattanooga, TN, and Braden Dill of Statesboro, GA; and his great-grandchildren, Ellie Jane, Lucy, Lizzie, Jack, Henry, and Charlie Wright of Albany, GA, Madeline Hamon of Jacksonville, FL, Everett and Oliver Pepin of Remer, MN, George, Kalob, and Brystal Saxon and Michaela and Kennedy Hayes of Statesboro, GA, Tristan, Gabrielle, and Isabelle Hamon of Jefferson, GA, Nathan and Tanner Dill of Greer, SC, and Allan, Zachariah, and Arianna McKay of Cleveland, TN.
The family will receive family and friends at Branch Church in Jenkins County, Georgia, on Highway 25 at 10:00 am on Wednesday, 18 Dec 2024. A service to celebrate Reverend Hamon's life will follow at 11:00 am.
Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
