On Friday, August 9, 2024, Georgia Southern University hosted Operation Move-In (OMI) for students who live on the Statesboro Campus or Armstrong Campus in Savannah. More than 4,000 students moved into on-campus housing during the OMI event.
This fall, the university is expecting a freshman class of 5,000 students throughout all three campuses. Overall, Southern looks to have more than 27,000 students this year, which will break the post-consolidation enrollment record.
With OMI coming right on the heels of Tropical Storm Debby, President Kyle Marrero thanked all of Bulloch County's public safety, EMA services, county manager, and everyone else for working together to be sure Statesboro was ready to have students moved in and ready on-schedule.
"It's a collaboration, and it's one we all want to be grateful for," said President Marrero.
During OMI, students and parents started by going to the RAC and receiving their keys, and they were then able to go see all the different tabling options.
Businesses lined up on the RAC basketball court were then crowded by students and parents looking to learn more about their new home away from home. They learned about different places to grub around campus, as well as in downtown Statesboro.
There were various university organizations tabling, giving out school merchandise and useful information, like the counseling center, financial aid, student activities and more. Also, several businesses were informing the newcomers about what they do and how they can get involved.
Grice Connect was there to make connections with the students and parents, informing them about what we do here in the community. It was important to us to let them know where they can find local news, keep up with Bulloch County events, and even keep an eye on gas prices and weather, all in one place.
First Day of Classes
Now that the students are all moved in, in-person classes will begin on Georgia Southern’s Statesboro, Armstrong, and Liberty campuses on Wednesday, August 14 for the Fall 2024 semester.
Welcome tents will be set up and staffed by volunteers across Georgia Southern’s campuses to welcome students and support them in their first week of classes.

The Eagle Experience
As thousands of new students begin their journey at Georgia Southern University, the University has developed The Eagle Experience, an award-winning orientation and transition program that helps new students to get acquainted with campus communities. It also allows faculty, staff, students and the community to come together as a new academic year begins.
Centered around holistic learning outcomes in three areas — Enrollment and Persistence, Community and Engagement, and Scholarship and Success — The Eagle Experience offers programming and events that are dedicated to helping students seamlessly acclimate to the college environment.
Throughout the experience, students and the campus community will have the opportunity to learn about Georgia Southern’s traditions, create connections with peers, faculty and staff, and be well-informed of enrollment milestones and resources to attain successful support as a new student.
All Eagle Experience events can be found by visiting GeorgiaSouthern.edu/
Let's give a big GRICE GOOD welcome to all new and returning Georgia Southern students! See a message from President Marrero below.
