Portal home damaged by fire early Monday

Bulloch County Fire and Statesboro Fire Departments responded to a house fire early Monday morning in Portal. The fire was in walking distance to the Bulloch County Fire Station in Portal.

At 2:23 AM, Monday, January 9, 2023, Bulloch County 911 dispatched the fire departments to a house fire in the 100 Block of Airport Lane in Portal.

Firefighters on Bulloch County Engine 22 were on the scene in seconds and reported heavy smoke coming from the eves of the home and requested additional firefighters and water supply.

Thanks to the rapid response and aggressive attack by firefighters the fire was contained to one room of the home and smoke damage throughout the home.

Bulloch County Red Cross Disaster Action Team was requested to provide immediate assistance to the homeowner. There were no injuries reported in the fire.

Bulloch County EMS responded as a precaution.

Portal Police Department and Bulloch County Sheriff's deputies responded to assist as well.

Bulloch Fire will conduct a routine cause and origin investigation. The cause of the fire is not known at this time.

This rapid response is another example of the positive impact of the continued expansion of fire services throughout the county. Bulloch County has began making renovations of the Portal Fire Station to add additional equipment including the expansion of adding an ambulance at the station in the near future.

Bulloch Fire now has three stations staffed 24/7 by firefighters and first responders in Portal, Brooklet and the newly added station in Register.
