In celebration of National Children’s Dental Health Month, Ogeechee Technical College dental assisting students visited more than 280 children at local pre-K classrooms on Thursday, Feb. 27. Schools included Bulloch Academy, Julia P. Bryant Elementary, Langston Chapel Elementary, Sallie Zetterower Elementary, Southeast Bulloch Pre-K, and Stilson Elementary.
Each group of dental assisting students created its own presentation, educating children about oral health and nutrition. They played games and discussed topics such as “sugar bugs” (bacterial plaque), proper brushing and flossing techniques, healthy and unhealthy snacks, and what to expect during a first visit to the dentist.

Yvonne Jenkins, OTC dental assisting program director, said she was pleased with her students’ efforts.
“I’m happy that we have the opportunity to share this information with the children,” Jenkins said. “It is important that children start good dental health habits now for a lifetime of good oral health.”
