On Saturday, September 23rd, the Statesboro Downtown Rotary Club unveiled the new Statesboro Peace Pole in a ceremony with several local officials and organizations attending the occasion.
The ceremony took place at 10am in the new boardwalk area behind the Statesboro Farmer's Market. The Statesboro Peace Pole is now a permanent display in this area for locals and visitors to visit.
The ceremony included local leaders, GSU international students, Rotary club members, and future leader groups--Girl Scout Troops 30209 and 30097 and the Our Girls Rock Too organization.
A few attending officials included:
- Mayor Jonathan McCollar
- Georgia State Representative Lehman Franklin
- Georgia State Senator Billy Hickman
- President of the Downtown Rotary Club of Statesboro Thad Riley
- Rotary Assistant Governor for District 6920 Shana Brinson
In recognition of the International Day of Peace and the international need for peace and understanding, Rotary International asked each Rotary Club around the world to purchase and install a Peace Pole in their city/neighborhood.
A Peace Pole is an internationally recognized symbol of the hopes and dreams of the entire human family; a standing vigil in silent prayer for peace on earth.
The Peace Pole has four sides, and each side details the international hope for world peace, "May Peace Prevail on Earth." One side is engraved in English, one in Korean, one in Spanish, and the final side in French.
