2019 has started strong with new businesses entering our market, along with expansions and residential development. Here are a few new developments that are in the works:
Jimmy Jazz is opening in the Southern Square Shopping Center (between Jackson Hewitt and Seasons of Japan). Jimmy Jazz is a clothing and shoe store. Jimmy Jazz founder & CEO James Kherzrie opened his first menswear store in New York City. The store is named after Khezrie’s favorite song from The Clash, a punk rock group from the late seventies.
According to their website, Jimmy Jazz and subsidiaries have over 170 stores on major streets and malls in the United States, which include over 30 in the New York Metro area. Stores feature premier lifestyle, streetwear and footwear brands including Nike, Jordan, Adidas, Polo Footwear, Levi’s, and Decibel, just to name a few. Petco has begun a $785,000 interior renovation for a “Thrive Pet Clinic” vet hospital within the existing store. In 2017, Petco responded to consumer demand for affordable, convenient, one-stop pet care by announcing a joint venture with “Thrive Affordable Vet Care” to incorporate full-service “Thrive” clinics in select Petco stores.
Thrive is a low cost vet hospital with a mission is to provide comprehensive, quality veterinary care for their patients, while saving time and money. Thrive opened its first location in January 2015 and continues to rapidly grow its network of animal hospitals across the United States. Their focus on wellness extends to the growing needs of their healthcare teams, making Thrive the employer of choice within the veterinary industry. This will be their second location in Georgia. Bulloch County Commissioners have broken ground on the new senior citizens center on a County-owned vacant parking lot located on Granade Street near Ogeechee Area Hospice. The new 6,200 square foot senior citizens center will be a welcome upgrade from their current 3,925 square foot space located at 515 Denmark Street. The center was made possible thanks to a $750,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. The construction of the facility will also offer space that is more functional and better access to shopping opportunities and medical facilities for users, while also relieving a wait list of approximately 32 people. Bulloch County will contribute an amount in excess of $300,000 and other in-kind services towards the success of the project. Lavender & Associates of Statesboro, Georgia will serve as the general contractor, while Carter Watkins Architects of Monroe, Georgia will provide construction management. Construction is anticipated to be completed by November of this year.
New life is coming to multiple stores downtown. Reflective Collective is a consignment boutique located at 39 West Main, next to the Averitt Gallery and Black Box Theater. Interior renovations have begun at 30 West Main Street (The Old Gee-Da’s) for a new locally owned steakhouse, “Bull and Barrel”. They anticipate opening late spring or early summer.

A new single-family subdivision off Packinghouse Road in the city named the Hartford Subdivision will include 150 lots for single-family homes with prices ranging from $140,000 to $180,000 in price and 1,400 – 2,200 Sq. Ft. in size.
Site development has begun on Windward South Residential Subdivision located off S&S Railroad Bed Road adjacent to the new Crossfit Boro gym development.
The Village at Millcreek (552 East Main Street) is continuing to build out Phase III of their apartment community. They have permits to build seven new buildings (five units each building) and currently have four more buildings in for architectural plan review.
