The City of Statesboro is now accepting applications for appointments to its newly established Statesboro Business Commission. The commission will consist of seven members who own or operate a business within the City of Statesboro and will serve as a sounding board for local entrepreneurs to identify opportunities for business development and growth within the city.

Statesboro City Councilmember Venus Mack, who represents the city’s third district and operates a business within the city limits, proposed the idea of creating a business commission to members of the Statesboro City Council earlier this year.

“Most local business owners only interact with City Hall one to two times a year when renewing their business license or paying property taxes,” says Mack.

“The goal of this commission is to bring local business owners together and learn from their first-hand experiences what it’s like to do business in Statesboro. It is my desire for Statesboro to be a place where people want to start their business or expand an existing business. Creating an open and welcoming environment where business owners feel they have a voice is essential to future business growth in Statesboro.”

The Statesboro Business Commission will have the authority to prepare studies and reports for the purpose of informing the Mayor and City Council on policy matters related to the impact of local ordinances and procedures on business opportunities and operations within the municipal limits of the City of Statesboro. Those interested in applying must be representatives of an entity holding an occupational tax certificate with the City of Statesboro. The deadline to apply is Friday, December 16, 2022, at 5:00 p.m.

The appointed commission members will serve staggered terms. The initial term of office of four designated appointees shall be two years and the initial terms of the other three appointees shall be one year. Succeeding members shall be appointed by the Statesboro Mayor and City Council for a term of two years. The Statesboro-Bulloch Chamber of Commerce shall have the option of recommending to Mayor and Council one qualified person from their membership to one of the one-year initial terms and any successive appointments for that position.
