The Statesboro Youth Chorale prepares for a summer demonstration concert

Under the direction of Dr. Michael Braz, Dr. Tamara Watson Harper, and Ms. Emily Kochetta, the Statesboro Youth Chorale will hold its summer demonstration concert this Thursday, July 21, at 6pm in the sanctuary of Pittman Park United Methodist Church.

Nearly 30 singers, ages 6-14, make up the two youth choirs in the chorale, and they have rehearsed weekly during a short summer session. The choirs will present a variety of songs during the concert, featuring well-known titles ranging from classical to folk to modern, with accompaniment by Diane Kessel on flute.

"Singing was so impacted by COVID, so the fact that the students are back together and singing is huge,” Harper said of the summer session. “They’re making music together, and it’s amazing. Some of the students have met best friends in the choir. They've had a great time this summer and are so talented.”

The young singers will be assisted by two student leaders, Sara Maria Maghiar, a rising high school senior, and Madison Patrick, a vocal performance major at Georgia Southern University.

"[The student leaders] are fantastic, and they've loved working with the choirs," Harper added.
