Drs. James Small and Chelsea Mikell have been expanding Ogeechee OBGYN to offer additional services to women in Statesboro and the surrounding areas.

Their latest addition to the practice is a partnership with Sweet Nectar Lactation & Infant Feeding Support. Sarah Kent, CEO of Sweet Nectar, will begin offering appointments out of The Annex to assist new and expectant mothers along their feeding journey.

Kent said, “Our vision is to elevate the lactation profession, ensuring a collaborative approach and continuity of care for every family. We are devoted to creating a connected and supportive network for families, exploring unique collaborations with healthcare providers to redefine the landscape of lactation support.”

In 2018, Sarah started as a Certified Lactation Educator Counselor (CLEC), from UC San Diego Extension in 2018. She completed an intensive internship to achieve the esteemed title of International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) in 2020.

Sweet Nectar will be offering a range of services to support families in feeding their babies.
These services include:

  • Prenatal Breastfeeding Classes
  • Prenatal Breastfeeding Consultations
  • Breastfeeding Consultations
  • Bottle Feeding Consultations
  • Pumping Consultations
  • Lactation Suppression Consultations
  • Weaning Consultations

Kent said, “I'm grateful for this opportunity to collaborate and partner with Ogeechee OBGYN, and I can't wait to see the positive impact on the lives of women and families in our community.”

Dr. Small said of the partnership that “Bringing Sarah in will offer additional services to new moms that will really build on our goal for ideal Women’s Health Care."

“In the first few weeks after a baby is born, many mothers experience difficulty related to breastfeeding and this can be a significant source of stress and anxiety--and not just for first time mothers! Historically in our community, there have been limited options for help after hospital discharge. By partnering with Sarah, who is an IBCLC and Infant Feeding Specialist, we hope to give access to this crucial resource for mothers and their babies. In addition to post-natal consultations, we also hope to improve access to prenatal education regarding breastfeeding and infant feeding in general.,” said Dr. Mikell.

Drs. Mikell and Small have been growing the Ogeechee Health brand to include not only traditional OBGYN services, but high risk pregnancy care and now lactation consultations. Dr. Mikell has been a part of Ogeechee OBGYN for five years and has been passionate about bringing lactation consultation to new moms.

“I believe this will be an incredible asset for the community of Statesboro and surrounding areas to support mothers. Having a consultation at the right time
(often before a typical postpartum visit) can make all the difference in a mother's feeding journey.”

In July 2023, they opened The Annex to offer high risk pregnancy care to patients needing additional monitoring. The goal of The Annex was to change the medical care available to pregnant women in the area by allowing these patients access to experienced medical care that can help to prevent pregnancy complications, save travel time and expenses for the families.

Both the high-risk pregnancy care of The Annex and Sweet Nectar’s lactation and infant feeding support is available to all women, via referral from their current physician.
