Georgia Southern men’s golf wins team title at Colleton for second straight season

The Eagles edged Kansas State by two strokes to take home the title

Georgia Southern men's golf team won the team title at the Colleton River Collegiate on March 7.

The 23rd-ranked Georgia Southern (GS) men's golf team has won the team title at the Colleton River Collegiate.

"Big win for the team and this program. They performed exceptionally well in another elite field and great golf course," said coach Carter Collins. "I am very proud of how the team stayed patient through a slow start to our opening round and played phenomenal golf the rest of the way to win this tournament."

Golfers Hogan Ingram and Ben Carr each posted a 68 to lead the to a third-round total of 281 on March 7 at the Colleton River Club Jack Nicklaus Course.

This is the second straight year and the third time overall the Eagles have won the team title. It was GS's second team tournament title of the season (Gopher Invitational) and its third win overall (match play vs. Yale).

The Eagles (-34) shot the second-lowest round of the day after matching the lowest team score in Tuesday's second round and edged No. 21 Kansas State (-32) by two strokes. 

Tournament host Michigan State (-26) finished third, Rutgers (-25) took fourth and Penn State (-24) was fifth. The field featured 12 teams in top-100 and five in top-50, according to Golfstat.

“There were a lot of fantastic teams here that played great golf, and we are very fortunate and humbled to be the Colleton River Collegiate champions. Hail Southern,” said Collins. 

Carr posted a clean card with birdies at three, 13, 14 and 15 to finish the tournament 10-under and tie for second. Wilson Andress backed up a 69-69 day yesterday with a 71 and tied for 13th at seven-under. 

Ingram birdied two of his first four holes of the day and played his last 13 holes clean with birdies on nine, 11 and 18 to reach five-under for the tournament and tie for 23rd along with teammate Mason Williams, who was paced by his 69-66 in yesterday's first two rounds. Parker Claxton, who shot 72-68 yesterday, posted a 74 today for the Eagles' final counting score.

Georgia Southern led the field in par-four scoring and in pars with 185 for the week.

Up next, GS hosts the 43rd Schenkel Invitational, one of the premiere events and longest running tournaments in college golf, at Forest Heights Golf Club in Statesboro on March 17 to 19.
