Georgia Southern harnesses defense to claim victory over ULM

The Eagles will now face Louisiana in the quarterfinals on Saturday night

Georgia Southern’s (GS) Eagles secured a 66-57 victory over the Warhawks Thursday night in the second round of the Hercules Tires Sun Belt Men's Basketball Championship in the Pensacola Bay Center.

Eagle of the game, Tyren Moore led the team with 16 points after making four of five from three-point range and added three assists and two steals. 

Kamari Brown posted 15 points, nine rebounds, a blocked shot and an assist.Tai Strickland tallied 10 points and four boards. Finch added five assists, four rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal. 

After Tyreke Locure hit a pull-up jumper to get ULM (11-21, 7-11) to within two points, Finch scored the Eagles' next 10, starting with a step-back triple. The fifth-year senior added a pull-up jumper on the team’s next trip down the floor, then a spot-up three-pointer off an assist by Brown and finally a pair of free throws that gave the Eagles a 61-53 lead with 40.4 seconds remaining.

Brown, Strickland and Kaden Archie combined to go five of six from the free-throw line in the last 35 seconds to seal the win. Georgia Southern held ULM to 4 for 17 shooting from the field in the final 11 minutes of the contest.

Thursday’s game was the fourth meeting between the teams in the Sun Belt Tournament, and GS has won all four.

Next up, GS takes on second-seeded Louisiana in the quarterfinals of the Hercules Tires Sun Belt Men's Basketball Championship Saturday. The teams met once this season with Louisiana taking a 94-87 win in the Cajundome Jan. 28.
