GC Sports | Bulloch County Softball Week 2 Recap

Bulloch County softball teams took home a bunch of wins in the second week of the season. Between all 4 schools, the softball teams finished with a combined record of 7-1 on the week.

Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets 

The Yellow Jackets entered week off of a red-hot 6-0 start. Southeast Bulloch had their first look at region play when they took on Calvary Day and Long County. The Yellow Jackets were able to come away with close wins in both games and improve their record to 8-0. On Tuesday August 20th, they defeated Calvary Day 6-5. SEB followed up with a 14-12 win against Long County on Thursday.

Head Coach Aimee Civalier spoke on her team's ability to come out on top no matter how tight the margin is. "We continue to find a way to win close games and it is truly a team effort," Civalier said. "Our offense continues to have quality at bats and we are outscoring our opponents."

Paige Nelson, Halleigh Morton, Megan Newham, and Hannah Griffi are leading the team in runs scored. Marissa Waters and Trell Reed lead the team in RBIs. Grace Gay and Paisley Nordeoff are leading in quality bats. The depth of the team has proven to be a big reason why Southeast Bulloch continues to have success.

The Yellow Jackets have 4 games slated for this week. They start off on Monday with a road game against Wayne County. On Tuesday, they host Jenkins in the second half of a back to back. SEB closes the week off with a road doubleheader against Liberty County on Thursday.

Statesboro High Blue Devils

The Statesboro Blue Devils were looking to bounce back from a 1-3 start to the season. With 2 wins on the week, they reach .500 with a 3-3 record. The Lady Devils faced off against familiar foes as they took on Swainsboro and Richmond Hill for the second time of the season. 

On Monday, the Blue Devils were able to take down Swainsboro 6-1. On Thursday, Statesboro got to avenge a loss from the previous week when they defeated Richmond Hill 12-7. Kate Yawn put on a show in Thursday's game. She finished with 4 runs and 2 hits including a solo homer. 

Up Next 

Statesboro will face off in a week-long series against the Brunswick Pirates. It begins on Tuesday with a doubleheader on the road. Thursday will be the final game of the season and it will take place at Mill Creek Park.

Portal Panthers 

Portal started off the season 1-1 and had 2 games to play last week. The Panthers split their two games of the week. Their record improves to 2-2 on the season. 

The week got off to a rocky start when the Lady Panthers fell to Screven County 12-1 on Tuesday. The Panthers followed up with a thriller on Thursday against Jenkins County. Portal was able to put together runs late in the game and win off of a walk off single by Halie Barnes to win the game 12-11. 

Up Next

Portal has 2 region games this week. On Tuesday, the Panthers will go on the road to take on the Emanuel County Institute Bulldogs. Thursday, Portal is back at home to take on Bryan County. Coach Travis Motes spoke on what is ahead for his team. "We've got big games next week," Motes said. "We can't afford to make the mistakes that we have made. We have to come Monday, work hard and get after it." 

Portal is looking to keep the momentum from their huge win against Jenkins.

Bulloch Academy 

Bulloch Academy started the year out 4-1 and had 2 more games last week. The Gators defeated Edmund Burke Academy 7-3 on Tuesday and followed up with a 4-3 win against Robert Toombs Christian Academy on Wednesday. 

Head Coach Ashley Burke spoke on her team's confidence and their play during this stretch of the season. "I think the girls have done a great job staying confident as the season progresses," Burke said. "It shows when you get in a close game, their confidence in themselves and teammates show." 

Senior pitcher Mckenna Furnari had a really good week as she completed both games this week. Furnari finished 12 strikeouts in Tuesday's win against Edmund Burke Academy. Piper Finley and Riley Anne Claxton both also came up clutch with crucial runs late in the game against Robert Toombs Christian Academy.

The Gators have 2 games scheduled for this week. Bulloch Academy will welcome the Claxton Tigers on Monday, August 26th. Their second game of the week will be on the road when they take on the First Presbyterian Day Vikings.
