This spring, the Statesboro varsity tennis squads showcased resilience and skill at the Region 1 AAAAA tournament held at Glynn Academy.

The Lady Devils, entering as sub-region champions, dominated their initial match against Evans, with Naomi Feltman, Maxine Feltman, and Ada Lacienski all securing decisive 6-0, 6-0 victories. They then advanced to the semifinals, where Maxine Feltman’s continued dominance, coupled with wins from Annalia Small, Lindsay Collins and Naomi Feltman, propelled them past South Effingham.

In the championship, they faced their only season rival, Lakeside, the previous year's 6A state finalists. Despite Maxine's continued perfect record, Lakeside ultimately prevailed, ending the Lady Devils' impressive 17-2 run.

Head coach Brian Hall expressed pride in the team's performance and optimism for the upcoming state playoffs.

The Statesboro men’s squad faced challenges due to injuries, forcing lineup adjustments. They secured a state playoff berth by defeating Greenbrier, with notable wins from Xavier Deckard and Davis Hall, as well as a crucial doubles victory from Sean Kim and Carter Copeland.

In the semifinals against Lakeside, Deckard continued dominance, along with another Kim and Copeland win and a clinching victory from Hall, sent them to the championship. Facing Glynn Academy, Deckard maintained his undefeated season, and the Kim and Copeland team delivered another clutch win.

However, Glynn ultimately secured the championship. Despite the loss, Coach Hall commended the team's ability to overcome adversity and their strong showing, highlighting their 14-5 season record and anticipation for the state tournament.

Congratulations and good luck to the Statesboro Blue Devils for their continued success on the season going into State play, which begins Tuesday, April 22.
