The Statesboro Police Department is excited to announce their ‘Letter to an Elder Project.’ This beautiful and heartwarming initiative is a thoughtful way to show care and concern, while brightening the lives of our senior residents in Statesboro.
The idea of sending “Thinking of You” cards is a great way to foster connection and make seniors feel valued and remembered. Ruth Atchley, Community Information Specialist at the Statesboro Police Department says that their officers don't get as much of a chance to have interactions with the Statesboro's Senior Citizens, who reside in local nursing homes or assisted and independent living residences, as they do with the rest of the community.
"Our ‘Thinking of You’ cards lets them know they are loved, cared for, and not forgotten. This simple gesture, a smile on their face, is the motivation to continue this project,” Atchley shared.

Every officer and staff member of the Statesboro Police Department contributed a ‘Thinking of You’ card for Eagle Health & Rehabilitation of Statesboro, Georgia, which was the first facility selected for the project’s initial distribution. They are committed to expanding this initiative and want to reach out in the area going forward.
The more residents they can connect with, the better.
“We would be thrilled to have every resident in the Statesboro and Bulloch County Community receive a card in the future, no matter their age or facility they reside in," Atchley said. "Our plan going forward would be to have a variety of officers deliver the letters, as well as visit the residents and get to see the friendly faces we have in the department.”

Atchley concluded, “The nursing home and assisted living residents in our community are very dear to the Statesboro Police Department. Unfortunately, we don’t have the chance to interact with them regularly during our patrols or on a day-to-day basis. We hope this project helps ‘bridge that gap’. It's a reminder that small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s day."
