Dr. Robert Ashley “Bob” Wells, Sr., of Statesboro passed away at his residence on August, 13, 2023 under the care of his family and Ogeechee Area Hospice.
He was born in Valdosta, GA to Leo Fred, Sr. and Orpa Lee Lawson Wells in 1934. He was a graduate of the Valdosta High School, Class of 1950 and participated in the marching band. Following high school, he attended and graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1957 and was stationed in Seattle, Washington. While on a visit to Vancouver, Canada sailing on the U.S.S. Coral Sea, he would meet the love of his life Glenda McMillan and they were married on January 21, 1961.
After serving his country, they returned to southeast Georgia and he obtained the role as band director for the Jenkins County High School. He would pursue higher education and returned to UGA where he received his Doctorate in Educational Psychology. In 1972, he took a job in Americus, Georgia at Georgia Southwestern and was very involved with the Church of Christ in the area. In 1975, He and his family settled in Statesboro and he was employed with Georgia Southern University as a professor in the Parker College of Business until his retirement.
He was active with the Georgia Southern Orchestra, playing french horn for many years. A devout Christian, Bob served his Lord and Savior at Statesboro Church of Christ as song leader and elder. In his spare time he was a Ham Radio hobbyist and had a passion for photography. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 62 years, Glenda Louise McMillan Wells of Statesboro; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Ashley, Jr. and Karie Wells of Ocoee, FL and David D. and Sherril Wells of Sylvania; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan Wells Elliott and Chris Elliott of Statesboro; grandchildren, Aidan Wells, Darien Adams, Jacob Adams, Brandon Adams, and Evie Elliott; and several great-grands, nieces, and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held at the Screven Memorial Cemetery with Minister Larry Sheehy officiating.
A memorial service at the Statesboro Church of Christ on September 2nd, 2023 at 1:00 PM.
