Rev. Jimmy Spivey

The Reverend Jimmy Lee Spivey, age 74, passed into to rest, Tuesday December 6, 2022, at the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah.

The Bulloch County native was born in Millen, Georgia to the son of the Frank and Georgia Ann Brinson Spivey.

He received his formal education in the public school system of Bulloch County and was a graduate of the William James High School class of 1967. After graduating high school, he began a career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He served his country in the United States Army in which he received an honorable discharge.

Reverend Spivey was employed with the District of Columbia Metro Transit. He retired after 25 years of service.  He also fulfilled a lifetime dream and became the owner of Spivey’s Landscaping.

As a man of faith, Rev. Spivey openly testified about his Christian faith and walk with God. As he grew in the Word and in his relationship with the Lord, he was chosen to be ordained to the Board of Deacons at St. Mary’s Baptist Church in Washington, DC in 1978. He was later licensed to preach the gospel in 1982 by Pastor James A. Kearse, Bethlehem Baptist Church, Alexandria, Virginia. And was later called to serve as Youth minister

After retirement, the Reverend Jimmy Spivey returned to Statesboro community and reconnected with his family and friends.  He became a member of the Original First African Baptist Church where; he became an ordained minister and served faithfully with his wife Judy until his health failed.

Rev. Jimmy Lee Spivey was a devoted and loving husband, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. His infectious laughter was his trademark, and the love of God in him shined on everyone he met. Even during his lengthy illness, he had a kind and encouraging word to give.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers, Groiny Spivey and Ervin (Sonny Boy) Watson, Jr, a sister, Ara Spivey Best and his grandmother Rosa Lee Collins.

Those left to cherish his legacy of love are, his devoted wife of fifteen years, Judy Lynette Spivey; Step-son, Larry Lamar Simon, II, Atlanta, Georgia; Step-daughter, Larecia  Julyn Simon, Statesboro, Georgia; devoted brothers, James Junior Spivey, Charlotte, North Carolina; James Edward (Margaret) Spivey, Statesboro, Georgia; Perry Lee Spivey, Columbia, South Carolina a sister, Dorothy (Joe) Lance, a host of nieces nephews, cousins, other relatives and devoted friends.

A viewing for Reverend Spivey will be held, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, December 16, 2022, at Hill’s Mortuary.

The Reverend Jimmy Lee Spivey will lie in state on the day of service, from 11 a.m. until the funeral hour. There will be no viewing after the eulogy.

The funeral services for Rev. Spivey, will be held 12 noon Saturday, December 17, 2022, at the Original First African Baptist Church, with the Rev. Christopher M. Culbreath, I, officiating. Burial will follow in the Bulloch Memorial Gardens with military honors.

Final rites have been entrusted to Hill's Mortuary, Inc.
