January 11, 1938 - August 12, 2023 Mrs. MariAnn Cason Pope, age 85, peacefully passed Saturday, August 12, 2023, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility in Statesboro.

MariAnn was born in Ashland, Alabama, on January 11, 1938, to the late Gerald Pond Cason and Bertie Runyan Cason. She graduated from Ashland High School. Prior to her marriage to Jeral D. Pope, Sr., on January 5, 1958, she spent some time at Alabama Polytech Institute (Auburn University).

MariAnn was a master gardener and a shared passion for flowers. Her gardens were always open to anyone that wanted to share the joy of gardening. She was always open to a good visit, cup of coffee, and showing her beautiful garden. Following in the footsteps of her mother, she traveled the world and enjoyed the sights and history of many different countries. She always had a bag packed and passport ready to take her grandkids on a trip to open their eyes to the world. She and Jeral traveled extensively within the United States. She never met a stranger in any setting and had a way to get people to open up and share their story with her. MariAnn had a way of making you feel like the center of the world while chatting.

MariAnn is preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by husband of 65 years, Jeral D. Pope, Sr., of Portal, GA; her son and daughter-in-law, Jeral “Dennis” Pope, Jr. (Joy) of Portal, GA; her daughter and son-in-law, Linda Jones (George) of Remer, AL; six grandchildren, Kim Brown (Sebe), Amanda Pope, John Ray (Katie), Casey Ray (Jennifer), Charlie Ray (Brittany), and Corey Jones (Brittany) and Christine Franklin (Justin) and eight great-grandchildren, Cason Ray, Bertie and Bricken Brown, Alice and Oli Jones, and Anna, Brantley, and Bailey Franklin.

The family will hold a private memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, PO Box 531, Statesboro, GA 30459, or to the Clay County Historical Society, PO Box 998, Ashland, AL 36251.
