The long-awaited traffic light at the intersection of Cypress Lake Rd. and Veterans Memorial Parkway is scheduled to begin operating on Wednesday, August 31.

Electronic signboards placed on the bypass last week advised drivers of the upcoming change.

The intersection improvement is years in the making and was a collaborative effort between GDOT and Bulloch County. GDOT initially proposed installation of an RCUT traffic pattern, but after public feedback, the plan was modified to a traditional traffic light.

An extensive amount of work went into restructuring the intersection. Turn lanes were added on both sides of Cypress Lake Rd., and traffic lights finally went in over the summer. The project was funded in part by a county TSPLOST.

The light is a welcome addition to the area, as a significant number of crashes -- some fatal -- have occurred in the intersection.

Donna Jarrett, who lives in a neighborhood nearby, recently witnessed a crash there on her way home and feels the light was a long time coming.

"I'm glad we're finally getting a light there," she said. "Whenever I'm outside and hear sirens coming from that direction, I know there has probably been another wreck."

GDOT will manage the function of the light and will adjust timing as necessary. Please be cautious and alert when approaching the intersection.
