On Thursday, February 27, 2025, the Statesboro Kiwanis Club gathered for its annual awards banquet, a night dedicated to celebrating service, community, and camaraderie. The event, which also marked the club’s anniversary, brought members together for an evening of recognition and reflection on the impactful work they’ve done throughout the year.

Kiwanis Club President Marilyn Darrell opened the evening with a warm welcome, emphasizing the club's dedication to service rather than accolades. “The people in this club aren’t ones who typically seek recognition and accolades,” Darrell noted. “Their joy comes from serving others. We love making a difference in the world, one child and one community at a time.”

Kiwanian of the Year: Honoring a Legacy of Service

The Kiwanian of the Year Award was presented posthumously to Steven Sanders, recognizing his years of dedication to the club and his impact on the community.

Bob Marsh, last year's Kiwanian of the Year, introduced this year’s recipient with heartfelt words about Sanders’ character and contributions.

“The Kiwanian of the Year exemplifies the work of the Kiwanis Club,” Marsh said. “I was amazed when I was selected last year, and I can tell you that this year’s honoree is truly deserving.”

Marsh described Steven Sanders as a humble, dedicated family man who loved his wife Kristie and son Dalton dearly. He was known for always being willing to help, working behind the scenes without seeking recognition.

A lifelong Statesboro resident, Sanders graduated from Statesboro High School and Georgia Southern University, where he earned a degree in finance. He worked in the banking industry for 18 years and served as the Kiwanis Club treasurer, ensuring the club’s financial success.

Beyond Kiwanis, Sanders was an active community leader, serving on the Boys & Girls Club board and the Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. A dedicated member of Old Fellowship Baptist Church, he also taught Sunday Bible classes and served as the church's finance officer. His passion for volunteering and love for outdoor activities—including hunting and fishing with his son—defined much of his life.

“This young man was only 47 years old when he passed away,” Marsh said solemnly. “But his impact will live on in this community.”

Steven Sanders’ family, wife Kristie, son Dalton, and mother Patti, accepted the award on his behalf, thanking the club for the recognition of his legacy.

A year of accomplishments

The evening highlighted the club’s numerous initiatives, from serving pancakes at their famous breakfast to collecting toys for children during the holidays. Darrell spoke about Project EAGLET, an initiative that gives every child in Bulloch County the opportunity to experience Georgia Southern University’s campus, sparking excitement for learning. Additionally, the club provides essential school supplies, including shoes, socks, underwear, and toiletries to children each fall, ensuring they start the school year prepared.

Another ongoing effort includes the collection of soft drink tabs for the Ronald McDonald House, as well as participation in Read Across America, where members collect and distribute books to local children. Darrell praised the dedication of Kiwanis members, stating, “We do these things because we can. We do these things because we love our community.”

The banquet also served as a time to honor members for their service. While not every name was called for an award, Darrell reassured all attendees that their contributions were deeply valued. “Whether you cut grass on Saturdays, serve at a blood drive, fill cups with ice on Thursdays, or greet people at the door, we appreciate you. Your presence makes a difference.”

Following the opening remarks, Trish Tootle led the group in prayer, and Sam Gaston led the Pledge of Allegiance.
