The Statesboro Fire Department, along with the American Red Cross, will be conducting a Smoke Alarm Blitz on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023, starting at 9 a.m.

The event will focus on mobile home communities located near the city limits of Statesboro and the department’s five-mile response district, specifically Barn Mobile Homes, Grady Johnson, English Oaks Community, Plantation Mobile Homes, Greenhaven, North Point, and homes located on Cindy Lane. Fire department personnel, as well as Red Cross volunteers, will walk these neighborhoods with 300 smoke alarms on hand to install free of charge for citizens who may need assistance.

In 2016, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reported that in roughly half of all manufactured home fires, smoke alarms are missing or disabled.

“Our focus as a department is to save lives and prevent fire-related injuries. Ensuring that homes in our community have working smoke alarms provides a means to accomplish that,” said Fire Chief Tim Grams.

The Smoke Alarm Blitz will be the second blitz conducted by the Statesboro Fire Department in 2023. Any resident who would like more information about smoke alarms for their homes or would like to discuss fire prevention steps for their family can contact the Statesboro Fire Department at (912) 764-3473.
