On August 3rd, Statesboro saw the beginning of the first-ever Nonna’s Market, held at Nonna’s Garage behind Nonna Picci on South Main St. in Statesboro. The market was started by Charly Kinship and will be held on the first Saturday of every month, bringing a sense of community through a unique “free market” concept. But what exactly is a free market?
According to Kinship, “A Free Market is like a huge family garage sale, with no money involved. Everyone is welcome to bring what they are wanting to give away and take what they need.” It’s a simple, yet effective idea. Share what you have and take what you need, with no money changing hands.
The decision to host the market at Nonna’s Garage was driven by the need for better shade and more activities for children, allowing adults to socialize and shop comfortably. It was previously hosted at a couple of different locations around town.
Kinship shared that this move has been a success. “That was the reason, and it did live up to our expectations,” she said.
“We had a great turnout with vendors and guests. Patronage will continue to grow,” Kinship noted happily.
One of the primary goals of the Free Market in the Boro is to reduce landfill waste. When asked about the market’s success in this regard, Kinship proudly stated, “The Free Market is very successful at keeping things out of the landfill. Not only are we giving items a second chance at the market, but any items that remain at the end are either taken to other charitable organizations or to Retails Thrift Shop or Christian Social Ministries. This ensures they have yet another chance to stay out of the landfill and continue to give back to our local community.”
Looking forward, Kinship has a clear vision for the market’s future. “My vision for the market is to have more people participate... giving and taking items so we have even more items staying out of the landfill, create greater community connection, share resources, and more families have a greater chance to thrive by saving money,” she shared.
Kinship also expressed her hopes for the market’s growth. “I want this to grow in a way that is sustainable and consistent so people know that we are a sharing community and that they can find some things they need... some things people may not otherwise be able to afford.”
Acknowledging the support that has made Nonna’s Market possible, Kinship gave a special shout-out to Nonna Picci for being a gracious host and to Joyce Sullivan for stepping up as co-coordinator. She also mentioned the team effort involved in making the market a reality: “Patrick, Manager of Nonna Picci, arranges the music. Emily of Nonna Picci and I work on setup, and I identify vendors and coordinate the activities for the day of the event.”
The Free Market In the Boro @ Nonna will continue the first Saturday of each month at Nonna's Garage from 12-3pm. There is a $5 entry fee for shoppers to help cover setup and music; children get in for free. Nonna's is located at 807 S. Main St. in Statesboro.
