This is a special report to Grice Connect from local veteran Bob Marsh.
A couple of weeks ago I was working BINGO at the American Legion Hall in Statesboro, a usual Tuesday night occurrence for me and several fellow veterans. A young man appeared, young to me at least. He was tattooed and with a shaved head. “Ken Yasger” introduced himself as he stuck his hand out for the traditional handshake. He told us that he was a veteran and was walking from Tybee Island to Atlanta to kick off his campaign to run for governor in 2024.
As I was talking to him, someone yelled “BINGO!”
That is my clue to make sure a valid Bingo has been made and to pay them. I had to leave. When I got back, Ken was nowhere to be found.
“Where’s Ken?” I asked.
“Who?” was the only reply.
“Ken, the guy that was just here.”
I looked outside. There was Ken sitting against the building.
“What can we do for you?” I asked.
“Oh, nothing,” was the casual reply. “I just need to charge my phone and answer some e-mails. I’ll be leaving soon. I have another hour of walking scheduled for today."
Another Bingo was called, and again, I had to leave Ken. When I got back, Ken was gone, presumably walking on to The Capitol.
Interesting story. But that is not the end. A week later, Ken showed up at BINGO again.
“I can’t stay long,” he said. “I raised $5,400 dollars on my walk. And I want to donate half to the American Legion."
I was almost speechless. But I managed to get a group together for a picture of him giving us a check.
