Keep Statesboro-Bulloch Beautiful and Ogeechee Riverkeeper host June pickup

Volunteers participated in a Little Lott’s Creek cleanup this past Saturday in Statesboro. Volunteers picked up several bags of trash along the waterway, keeping that litter out of the Canoochee and Ogeechee Rivers and ultimately the Atlantic Ocean.

Keep Statesboro-Bulloch Beautiful (KSBB) and Ogeechee Riverkeeper (ORK) recently held their June trash pick-up at Little Lott's Creek.

Founded in 2021, the “Don’t Litter Lott’s Initiative” is a partnership between Keep Statesboro-Bulloch Beautiful and Ogeechee Riverkeeper to reduce litter pollution in Little Lott's Creek, which runs right through the middle of Statesboro.

Several years ago, Ogeechee Riverkeeper installed floating litter traps called "booms" in the creek. The minimally invasive booms capture pieces of litter to prevent it from continuing to flow down the creek.

Lauren PorterLead Volunteer for the Ogeechee Riverkeeper says, "By 2023, the litter booms helped to collect approximately 500 pounds of trash from Little Lotts Creek."

The waterway, located off the intersection of Zetterower Avenue and Fair Road, is a prime spot for debris to collect. Plastic bottles, glass bottles, styrofoam, plastic debris, and more were picked up Saturday morning by volunteers. A total of 10 pounds of trash was collected.

The water from Little Lott's Creek leads to the Canoochee River and then into the Ogeechee River before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean, so collecting the litter at its source is vital.

Trash items picked up that can be recycled or repurposed are collected locally by GreenRock Recycling.

The Little Lott's Creek pick up is typically held every 4-6 weeks, and volunteers are always needed.
