Fatal single vehicle crash closes Hwy. 46 in Bulloch County

A fatal single vehicle crash on Hwy. 46 in Bulloch County forced the closure of the road between Old Register Way and Sinkhole Road, with emergency crews responding to the scene near Hawkshaw Circle.

A fatal single vehicle crash on Hwy. 46 in Bulloch County led to a temporary closure of the road between Old Register Way and Sinkhole Road. 

According to GSP a 74 year old man died in the crash.  Based on the preliminary investigation they think he may have had a medical episode leading to the crash.  He was the only occupant in the vehicle.  GSP Corporal Aaron Ramirez is handling the crash investigation.

Bulloch County Deputy Coroner Chuck Francis also responded to the scene to assist in the investigation.  Deputy Coroner Francis confirmed that family has been notified and identified the man as John Wilford Bennett of Statesboro.

The incident, which occurred near Hawksshaw Circle, prompted a swift response from Bulloch County EMS, Fire Department, Sheriff's Deputies, and GSP Troopers around 1:00 pm on Sunday, June 30, 2024.  As of 3:30 pm the roadway had been reopened.

Bulloch County Sheriff's Deputies shut down Hwy. 46 for a few hours to facilitate an investigation by GSP Troopers and to clear debris from the roadway. Motorists were advised to steer clear of the area and seek alternative routes if traveling on Hwy. 46 Sunday afternoon.
