Inaugural Brawl in the Boro highlights wrestling’s growth in Southeast Georgia

The inaugural Brawl in the Boro tournament showcased the growing passion for wrestling in Southeast Georgia, bringing over 215 competitors from various clubs to the Statesboro High School gym on January 19, 2025. With participants as young as five and a strong push from coaches and parents to expand local wrestling programs, the event marked a significant step in promoting the sport in the region.

The gym at Statesboro High School was transformed into a battleground on January 19, 2025, as the inaugural Brawl in the Boro wrestling tournament brought over 215 young athletes from across the region. Originally planned as a small event with around 150 participants, the tournament exceeded expectations and required a last-minute expansion from three mats to five.

The event drew competitors from more than ten wrestling clubs, representing athletes ranging in age from 5 to 14.

“This tournament exceeded expectations,” said Statesboro High wrestling coach Chris Wickstrom. “We used this tournament to promote the great sport of wrestling in our area, and there most certainly will be a second annual tournament next year. We hope to make it even bigger.”

The event was not only a success on the mats but also financially, raising $7,000 for the Statesboro High wrestling team. The funds will help purchase new singlets next season, ensuring the team looks sharp as they continue to grow.

Bringing Wrestling to Southeast Georgia

While the tournament was a showcase of talent and enthusiasm for the sport, it also highlighted a larger challenge: wrestling remains underdeveloped in Southeast Georgia. Currently, only Statesboro High School and Bulloch Academy have wrestling programs in Bulloch County.

The Bulloch County Recreation Department offers a youth wrestling club, but for students in many schools, opportunities to participate in the sport are scarce.

At a recent Board of Education meeting, a Bulloch County parent spoke passionately about reinstating the wrestling program at Southeast Bulloch High School, which has not had one in years. The parent noted that Southeast Bulloch High is one of only two schools in its classification without a wrestling program and suggested adding a feeder program at Southeast Bulloch Middle School to build interest and skill among younger students.

“Wrestling is tremendously beneficial,” the speaker said, emphasizing the sport’s physical demands and its ability to build mental toughness. Advocates believe the sport’s growing popularity, particularly among girls, makes it a perfect fit for Bulloch County’s expanding population and the construction of a larger high school facility.

Discussions are also underway to explore hosting a summer wrestling camp, potentially at Georgia Southern University. A camp would allow young athletes to develop their skills, introduce new participants to the sport, and lay the foundation for a stronger wrestling community in the area.

The Future of Wrestling in Bulloch County

The tournament provided a glimpse into what could be a bright future for wrestling in Southeast Georgia. With the support of parents, coaches, and the community, local advocates hope to grow the sport by expanding school programs and creating opportunities for youth to compete at all levels.

The success of the Brawl in the Boro is just the beginning of what many hope will become a lasting tradition in the region. As Coach Wickstrom said, “There most certainly will be a second annual tournament next year, and we hope to make it even bigger.”
