Georgia Southern University has been recently named a top four-year university on Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society’s 2024 Transfer Honor Roll for creating dynamic pathways that lead to excellence and success among community college transfer students.
Recognized on a list of only 228 colleges and universities in the nation, this marks the fourth year Georgia Southern has been placed on the Transfer Honor Roll.
“At Georgia Southern University, we pride ourselves on equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel both professionally and as active, contributing members of society,” said Executive Vice President for Enrollment, Marketing and Student Success Alejandra C. Sosa Pieroni, Ed.D. “Our recognition on Phi Theta Kappa’s 2024 Transfer Honor Roll underscores our dedication to creating supportive pathways for all students, particularly transfer students, ensuring they can thrive academically and personally. Through dynamic initiatives and comprehensive support systems, Georgia Southern empowers students to have successful careers and contribute meaningfully to their communities.”
The Transfer Honor Roll is determined by 40 key metrics related to the support and success of transfer students, including college cost and financial aid, campus life for transfer, admission practices and bachelor’s degree completion.
Georgia Southern addresses the evolving needs of transfer students by forming opportunities for these students to have direct access to resources as they transition to the University, whether face-to-face or through distance learning.
Among the outreach and admissions programs for prospective transfer students are a variety of Transfer Visit Days and transfer session pathways during Eagle Previews. These in-depth visit days include academic sessions, student services sessions, campus tours, transfer student panels and application fee waivers for participants. Online information sessions, such as a monthly “Lunch and Learn,” are available to accommodate students who are unable to visit campus. Each of these opportunities is designed to focus on transfer students’ unique needs during the enrollment process.
Transfer students can share schedule preferences shortly after commitment, which allows an academic advisor to begin preparing their schedule in advance, ensuring they have courses that meet their personal and academic needs. The students also have a variety of online modules to complete shortly before starting classes so that they they have all of the information and resources they need to be successful when transferring to Georgia Southern.
Georgia Southern’s active chapters of Phi Theta Kappa Alumni and Tau Sigma provide additional opportunities for community and engagement for transfer students.
Phi Theta Kappa recognizes the academic achievement of students at associate degree-granting colleges and helps them to grow as scholars and leaders. The society is made up of more than 4.3 million members and nearly 1,300 chapters in 11 countries, with approximately 240,000 active members in the nation’s colleges.
