Georgia Southern Military and Veteran Services hold 2nd Golf Scramble

To celebrate Memorial Day weekend at the Georgia Southern Golf Course, military, veterans, and supporters were invited to come out and play an 18 par game of golf in honor of the fallen. All proceeds from the event are going toward military-connected students at Georgia Southern.

Early on the morning of May 24, 2024, supporters of Georgia Southern University's Department of Military and Veteran Services were able to get out and enjoy a day of golfing for a good cause.

Their second annual golf scramble was not just a way to raise money for military students at Georgia Southern, but gave participants an opportunity to remember the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, and to honor them along with their families.

To kick off the tournament, Colonel George Fredrick, Director of Military & Veteran Services, spoke about the nearly one million soldiers who have died for this country, and asked the audience to stop by one of the Georgia Southern campuses and take a look at the flags, which mimic the Heroes Walk at Fort Stewart.

He then introduced Miss Izzy Brown (Isabella Rose Lotte Brown), a graduate student at Georgia Southern. Brown is working toward her Master of Science in Criminal Justice and Criminology. She is the daughter of a solider who made the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan. For her contributions and her hard work, she was awarded a $9,000 Robert S. Haywood Scholarship. This scholarship is available to students attending Georgia Southern who have or had parents who served in the military. Not only that, but she was also offered free dental services by Ronald A. Tosto, DDS & Associates that will cover her for as long as she is in college.

Dozens of local leaders and donors enjoyed the tournament that followed this surprise scholarship award ceremony. Food and drinks were offered throughout the game, and in the golf course lobby, but while the tournament was fun, nothing could compare to seeing Brown and our other military heroes as they were honored that morning.

"We had a first place team, a second place team, longest drive male, longest drive female, closest to the pin, and every participant got something," said Colonel Fredrick but, "The cause was more important than individual or team accolades."
