Westward and Upward

  • Georgia Southern is 4-1 all-time in games played in the Pacific Time Zone: 2-0 in Tacoma, Washington; 1-0 in both Reno, Nevada, and Moscow, Idaho; and 0-1 in Corvallis, Oregon.
  • Mackay Stadium in Reno sits at 4,610 feet above sea level, a mere 4,400 feet higher than Paulson Stadium in Statesboro (210 feet above sea level). It's not the highest elevation the Eagles have ever played at. That would be at Colorado State's Hughes Stadium in Fort Collins, which sits at 5,910 feet above sea level.

Of Note

  • This will be the third meeting between Georgia Southern and Nevada, but the first in the regular season, with the Eagles holding a 2-0 lead. Georgia Southern won the first matchup, which came in the 1986 Division I-AA semifinals at Mackay Stadium, 48-38, as the Eagles went on to win their second straight national title the next week in Tacoma, Washington. In 1990, Georgia Southern downed Nevada 36-13 at Allen E. Paulson Stadium in the Division I-AA National Championship Game to claim its fourth national title.
  • This is the second of two straight meetings against Mountain West opponents as the Eagles fell to Boise State last weekend at home to open the season.
  • Georgia Southern is 2-2 all-time against MWC teams, 2-0 against Nevada and 0-1 against Colorado State and Boise State. Head coach Clay Helton is 5-1 as a head coach against MWC teams (2-0 vs. Fresno State, 1-0 vs. UNLV, San Jose State and Utah State, and 0-1 against Boise State).
  • Nevada head coach Jeff Choate was the linebackers coach for the University of Florida in 2013 when Georgia Southern went into Gainesville and beat the Gators 26-20 for the first Power 5 win in program history.
  • Georgia Southern's Dorrian Smith and Nevada's Keyshawn Cobb played together at Peach County High in Fort Valley, Georgia.
