The House Republican Caucus met this week to elect leadership for the upcoming 2025-2026 legislative term, with Bulloch County's State Representative Jon Burns (R-Newington) nominated to continue as the speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives. This will be Burns' second term as speaker, marking a continuation of his leadership role in Georgia’s legislative body. Also nominated for another term as House Speaker Pro Tempore was Representative Jan Jones (R-Milton).

“It has been an immense honor and privilege to serve as Georgia’s 75th Speaker of the House, and I am deeply grateful for the unwavering trust and support of my colleagues and friends,” Speaker Burns said in a statement following the caucus vote. “As we reflect on all that we’ve achieved together, I’m more confident than ever that our caucus will continue to deliver meaningful results—whether it's passing historic tax cuts, investing in education, expanding access to healthcare, or making our communities safer. I look forward to the continued work ahead as we strive to grow and strengthen our Republican majority.”

Burns represents Georgia House District 159, covering Screven County and portions of Bulloch and Effingham counties. A legislator since 2004, he is respected across party lines for his commitment to policy matters affecting the local area and the broader state.

The caucus also elected the following leadership positions:

House Majority Leader: Rep. Chuck Efstration (R-Mulberry)
House Majority Whip: Rep. James Burchett (R-Waycross)
House Majority Caucus Chairman: Rep. Bruce Williamson (R-Monroe)
House Majority Caucus Vice-Chairman: Rep. Houston Gaines (R-Athens)
House Majority Caucus Secretary and Treasurer: Rep. Ginny Ehrhart (R-Powder Springs)

Burns’ official re-election as speaker will occur on January 13, 2025, when the House of Representatives convenes for its new session.

As Speaker, Burns will continue to preside over House sessions, manage committee leadership, assign bills to committees, and guide key legislative actions on the House floor.
