Vandy's BBQ has been operating at its current location since 1943 after moving from its original home in Portal, Georgia, where the doors were opened in 1929. Problems with the aging structure forced the restaurant to close in June.
“We had to replace the roof, which was the main reason,” said managing partner Michael Blackmon. “We took advantage of the opportunity to replace the hood system,” he added.
Blackmon shared that these renovations are going to enable the kitchen to boast a greater cooking capacity and help Vandy’s bring some of the old school specials from the former mall location back to downtown.
Wilco construction, Ogeechee Heating and Air, and Keystone Roofing were all ‘a big help’ in the repairs according to Blackmon, who says that Vandy’s has also uncovered the original ‘beautiful wood ceilings’ to match the new wood floors, with a fresh coat of paint bringing it all together.
“We really want to bring it back to just kind of what everybody remembers as a kid,” said Blackmon, indicating that while the food has always been made with love, Vandy’s has gone through a handful of owners over the years. Blackmon assures us that with this reopening, recipes for the beloved eats are being perfected, and an emphasis on appreciation for the community of adoring fans that Vandy’s has built over the last 95 years will be at the front of their minds.
The restaurant reopened in September, and the owners took to their Facebook page advertising the 'New and improved' dining experience, as well as open applications for more excellent staff.
With new cooks and staff, Blackmon says Vandy’s is making sure they are ‘dialed in’ to bring diners their favorite Statesboro Barbeque between 6 am and 2 pm every Monday through Saturday.
