A Statesboro High School (SHS) student was killed Wednesday morning on her way to school. She was a Junior at SHS on headed to participate in the last day of school activities for the school year.

Bulloch County Corner Jake Futch identified the student as Ava Epps, 17 of an Adabelle road address. Futch was told that she was a student at SHS and was on the way to take finals on the last day of school this morning. She was driving a white Jeep SUV.

Bulloch 911 dispatched emergency services to the intersection of Union Church - Adabelle road and Highway 301 South for a serious two vehicle car crash around 7:30 am Wednesday, May 26.

A Bulloch Sheriff’s Deputy was first on the scene and reported the driver of one of the vehicles was seriously injured and entrapped in a white Jeep.

Bulloch EMS, Fire and Rescue responded to the scene as did Evans County EMS and Evans County Fire and Rescue. Evans County Rescue was able to gain access to the white Jeep.

According the Lee Weaver, GSP Post 45 Commander, Ava turned left from Adabelle road onto Highway 301 South in the path of a large commercial flatbed truck. The truck was traveling south on Highway 301 and struck Epps Jeep on the drivers side. Weaver said Epps was moments from her home, just down Adabelle road.

After the crash the two vehilces ended up on the north bound side of Highway 301 South.

The driver of the truck experienced minor injuries and was not transported by EMS. Ava was pronounced dead on the scene by Bulloch County Coroner Jake Futch. There were no passengers in either vehicle.
