The sudden death of Georgia State Senator Jack Hill has created the need for a special election to fill his unexpired Senate term which ends in December 2020. The 2020 General Assembly session is still in session but on recess due to COVID-19. There will be another election in November to fill the full two year term.
Georgia Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, announced that a special election will be held on June 9 in the parts of Bulloch, Candler, Effingham, Emanuel, Evans, and Tattnall counties that comprise Georgia State Senate District 4. A run-off, if needed, will be held on Aug. 11.
Qualifying for the special election will be held in the Elections Division of the Office of Secretary of State, 2 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SE, West Tower Suite 802, Atlanta. The dates and hours of qualifying will be Monday, April 13 beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at 5 p.m., Tuesday, April 14 beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at 5 p.m., and Wednesday, April 15 beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at 1 p.m. The qualifying fee is $400.
Monday, May 11 is the last day to register to vote for all persons who are not registered to vote and who desire to vote in the special election.
According to the Secretary of State as of 5 PM today, three people had qualified for the election. Dr. Scott Bholke, a family practice doctor in Brooklet, Billy Hickman, a CPA in Statesboro and Kathy Palmer an attorney and retiring Superior Court Judge from Swainsboro.
