In the Saturday edition of the Statesboro Herald, Jim Healy operations manager for the paper announced the Herald will be reducing their publishing days to one day per week.

Beginning on Thursday, January 19, 2023 the local newspaper will only be printed one day per week. They will continue mailing the newspaper on Thursdays.

This is a sad day in our community, but not an unexpected one. Unfortunately, this is a trend that is happening in communities across the globe.

Your support of local news needed

The remaining staff at the Herald report to work everyday because they care deeply about this community. I have worked beside each of them and will assure you that they are some of the best in the business. Everyone of them could make more money by leaving the news business. However, they continue to show up because they love what they do and they want provide important local news to our community.

This is a difficult and uncertain time for each of them. Join me in supporting them in any way you can. I have just renewed my subscription to the Herald and enjoy getting my paper whatever day it comes. I encourage you to do the same.

Grice Connect rebuilding local daily news

When the Herald reduced from a six day a week publication and discontinued door-to-door delivery, I made the decision to leave my position as Business Editor. I did this, so I could focus full-time on developing Grice Connect, an alternative hyper-local digital-first news source. I knew our community needed and deserved more than local news a few times a week.

At Grice Connect, we made the important decision to share access to local news, obituaries, event listings and community information free and available to everyone.

If you are enjoying Grice Connect and believe in our mission of rebuilding reliable, timely and accurate local news, we need your help now more than ever. There are a few ways you can help us:

  • Help us grow our audience by making sure your family and friends know about our free Bulloch County Daily newsletter. You can share the newsletter with them by forwarding this story or sharing this link.
  • Your financial support helps to grow our staff and ensure longterm sustainability of local news. One critical area we must recruit for immediately is sports. We need to build out a strong team who will focus on local high school sports. You can make a tangible difference for as little as $10 per month. Learn more here.
  • Advertise with us! We rely on local advertising to pay our bills. Every dollar local businesses invest in connecting with our local audience directly supports the growth of local news in our community. Send us a message here for details.

Communities flourish when news and information is available

Many communities in America have seen their local newspapers vanish leaving them with no local news option. Local news not only informs citizens but it also helps to build community among its readers. When this disappears local residents lose touch with each other and eventually become less engaged in civic life.

A more informed and connected community improves the social capital of a community. Strong social capital leads to a more involved community. That in turn leads to better government, better schools and more philanthropy.

The commitment to bring local news daily to you is not easy or inexpensive. It is more important than ever that you join our efforts in rebuilding local news by supporting our work financially now. Your support of Grice Connect will allow us to become financial sustainable and provide us the needed resources to grow our reporting staff. Every dollar your commit will go directly into funding more reporting staff.
