The Downtown Statesboro Development Authority announces the completion of their latest project, the Downtown Art Alley. The newly renovated alley is located next to the Averitt Center for the Arts at 8 Siebald St.
The 2021 Downtown Art Alley project was made possible by the Vibrant Communities grant. The alley project consisted of a full renovation including cleaning, painting, hanging stringed lighting, planting trees and flowers, and adding bistro tables and art pieces.
The Downtown Art Alley has an Italian theme with an art banner representing Monte Compatri, Italy, which was named Statesboro’s sister city in October of 2016. Many students at Georgia Southern University that have had the opportunity to study abroad in Monte Compatri can visit the Downtown Art Alley and reminisce on their travels.
Allen Muldrew, the Executive Director of the Downtown Statesboro Development Authority, and the rest of the DSDA team spent months planning and executing this project. “We were inspired by other communities in the nation that have revived vacant alleyways and parking lots in downtown areas to create pocket parks. We wanted to create a space where people could enjoy the outdoors, take photos, or enjoy lunch downtown,” he said.
The Downtown Statesboro Development Authority would like to extend a special thanks to the Averitt Center for the Arts, who applied for the Georgia Council for the Arts’ Vibrant Communities grant.
