Peggy Anne Owens Moore, age 87, passed away Friday September 23, 2022 at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick.
Peggy was a lifelong native of Glynn County and graduated from Glynn Academy in 1952. She was raised as a member of Norwich Street Baptist Church where she served as the Young Adult Sunday School Teacher, held various Children’s Sunday school teacher positions, participated in the WMU (Woman’s Missionary Union) and was a Vacation Bible School teacher.
Peggy attended Tift College then married and became a mother. Later in life, at the age of forty-two, she went back to College, graduating from Georgia Southern with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1979. Peggy then began her formal teaching career by teaching third grade at Ballard Elementary School where she continued to influence the lives of many children.
Peggy became a member of Christian Renewal Church where she actively served in the “Joy Ministry”, helping those in need. She was a founding member of Believers Church in Statesboro, which was established in 2001. She was also a member of the Georgia Power Ambassadors, the Prime Timers and the Red Hat Society.
Peggy loved art, collecting angels, southern Gospel music, cooking, and hosting others in her home. Most of all, Peggy loved her family with a passion, and loved to spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her beautiful smile and giving heart would make people feel instantly loved and cared for. She proved to be a true servant of Christ Jesus by serving others. She loved children and loved caring for the under resourced and those who were experiencing trouble in their lives. Peggy was a loyal friend to many, and she respected and treated everyone equally. She was very interpersonal, selfless, and never meet a stranger.
Peggy loved unconditionally and was a woman of strong faith and convictions. She and her husband, Leland, raised their four boys in church while serving in all aspects of the ministry, and taught her children how to serve others, too. She lived a blessed life due to her strong relationship with Jesus and because she walked in her purpose and destiny daily. She experienced the joy of the Lord on this earth as she served others and now she has forever entered the presence and joy of the Lord.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Leland Moore; sons, James Leland Moore and Russell Owens Moore; her parents, former Glynn County Sheriff Mitchell and Peggy (Ila) Owens; and four brothers, Bobby, Barry, David, and Harry “Punky” Owens.
Peggy is survived by two sons, Robert “Scott” Moore (Janet) of Statesboro and Joffre Louis Moore of Brunswick; two granddaughters, Carmen Berg of Ogden, UT and Marissa Mercer (Tripp) of St. Simons Island; two grandsons, Bradley Moore (Nikki) of Hazlehurst and Tyler Moore of Statesboro; six great granddaughters, Madelyn, Montgomery and Meadow Moore, Ellison and Copeland Mercer and Lyla Moore; two great grandsons, Luke Scott and Arthur Metras; a brother, Mitchell Owens (Sallie) of Jacksonville, FL and two sisters-in-law, Frances Owens and Rhonda Owens, both of Brunswick. Many nieces, nephews and friends are left to cherish the memories of Peggy Anne Moore.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 28 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Thursday at 11:00 am at Christian Renewal Church with her son, Pastor Scott Moore, Reverend Bill Ligon and Pastor Mark Linton officiating. Pallbearers will be Bradley Moore, Tyler Moore, Tripp Mercer and Dennis Varnadore. Burial will follow in Palmetto Cemetery.
