Spencer Popwell an escaped felon has been captured at 7:20 am on Tuesday, September 13, 2022. Sheriff Noel Brown confirmed he was captured in the near Willingway Hospital not far from where he crashed the Bulloch County work truck on Monday.

Popwell was transported to the Bulloch County Jail for processing and then he will be transported to the State Prison system.

Grice Connect followed this story throughout the night and continued to give updates until he was captured.

Sherriff Brown Extends Thanks to Citizens and Agencies

Bulloch County Sheriff Noel Brown extended thanks the public safety agencies who came to assist his deputies in this nearly 14 hour manhunt. Some of the agencies include Evans County Sheriff's office, Statesboro Police Department, Georgia Southern University Police Department, Georgia State Patrol, Georgia Department of Corrections Fugitive Task Force and the U.S. Marshalls Fugitive Task Force.

Most importantly he wants to thank the citizens for staying alert and continuing to notify them of suspicious activity and sightings of Popwell. This is another great example of the important role citizens play in assisting law enforcement.

Remained in area

Bulloch County Sheriff Noel Brown told Grice Connect they were confident he remained in the search area which was in the Jones Mill Road and Coach Lee Hill Blvd. area. Sheriff Brown said his deputies and other law enforcement agencies continued the search throughout the night and kept a tight perimeter on this area.

Sheriff Brown assured citizens throughout the manhunt that they would remain vigilant until Popwell was back in custody.

Popwell escaped from work detail Monday

Popwell, who is from the Brunswick, Georgia area, is an inmate at the Bulloch County Correctional Institute and was on a work detail off of Lakeview road near Metts road when he escaped. He took a Bulloch County white Ford F-150 and fled the scene a little before 3:00 pm, Monday, September 12, 2022.

Bulloch Sheriff Noel Brown spotted the truck moments later as it turned onto the bypass from Hwy. 301 North. Deputies began pursuit and the truck turned onto Jones Mill Road.

Popwell refused to stop and crashed the truck in a wooded area near the Heritage Inn Health and Rehabilitation and Coach Lee Hill Boulevard.

Law enforcement locked down Statesboro High School, Heritage and Willingway Hospital as a precaution on Monday.

Popwell fled the scene on foot into the wooded area. Law enforcement established a perimeter and brought in K-9’s from SPD, Bulloch Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Department of Corrections. They also deployed drones from Bulloch Sheriff’s office.

Law enforcement continued to keep a heavy police presence around the perimeter which covered multiple neighborhood throughout the night while they searched for Popwell.

Spencer Popwell is serving time for "non violent" felony theft incidents according to the Bulloch Sheriffs Office.
