Update 5:30 am Tuesday, September 13: Escaped felon Spencer Popwell remains at large. According to Bulloch County Sheriff Noel Brown they believe he remains in the search area which is in the Jones Mill Road and Coach Lee Hill Blvd. area. Sheriff Brown said his deputies and other law enforcement agencies continued the search throughout the night. They will remain vigilant until Popwell is back in custody. He encourages citizens to stay alert as you prepare to leave your homes this morning. If your vehicle was left unlocked during the night, check the vehicle before getting into it Statesboro High staff and students can return to school today. There will be an increased law enforcement presence as a precaution. If you think you see Popwell do not approach. Also if you see anything suspicious call 911 or Bulloch Sheriff's Office at 912-764-8888.
At 11:30 pm - Georgia Department of Corrections have joined the search for escapee Spencer Powell. Area law enforcement continues to maintain a tight perimeter around multiple neighborhoods in the Coach Lee Hill Blvd. and Jones Mill Road area. Stay alert and report an suspicious activity.
At 8:50 pm - escapee Spencer Popwell remains at large. Law enforcement is continuing their search. Anyone who sees someone meeting his description is asked to call 911. If you see something, say something. DO NOT APPROACH.
Update 6:38 pm heavy police presence continues near SHS and Jones Mill road as deputies and police search for escaped felon Spencer Popwell, 51, white male, 5’10” approximately 175 pounds. If you see anyone meeting this description call 911 and report. DO NOT APPROACH.
At 4:51: The Sheriff's Office would like to make the public aware that there will be heavy Law Enforcement in the area of Jones Mill Rd, Lester Rd and other surrounding areas in Statesboro in an attempt to locate Spencer Popwell. Popwell is a 51 year old white male 5'10" approximately 175 pounds. Popwell escaped from a prison work detail earlier today. Please try to avoid the area if possible. If any contact is made with Popwell, do not approach and contact 911 or the Sheriff's Office immediately. Popwell is serving time for felony theft incidents.
At 4:20 pm Monday, September 12th, the Statesboro Police Department issued an escaped convict alert.
A white male has escaped from the Department of Corrections and was last seen on foot nearby Coach Lee Hill Blvd and Jones Mill Road. He is 5'10 and wearing a fluorescent shirt with dark green pants. If anyone sees him please call us at 912-764-9911.
